Florida snorkeling

Florida is home to many wonderful areas where snorkeling in shallow waters will give you all kinds of magnificent things to see under the waters. A break down of the most popular snorkeling areas in Florida include Boca Raton, Singer Island in West Palm Beach, Orlando, Sanford, Panama City, The Keys, Bathtub Reef, King’s Spring, Wekiva Springs, and Crystal River.

Boca Raton is home to Red Reef Park where the beginner snorkeler is sure to find fascinating. The bottom type is rock ledges and sand with a visibility of 10 to 15 feet. The water is only 3 to 6 feet deep so it is awesome for snorkeling for even young children. Some of the fish that call the area home include schnooks, barracuda, grunts, crabs, sergeant majors and more. Directions to Red Reef Park are as follows: Take I-95 to Palmetto go east until you reach A1A and then head north. The snorkeling sites are at the south end of the park.

Singer Island in West Palm Beach is home to a few wonderful snorkeling areas. To find Singer Island take I-95 to Blue Heron Blvd, go east on Blue Heron Blvd, keep going until Blue Heron Drive turns into N. Ocean Drive or A1A. At Singer Island, you will enjoy Lake Worth Inlet, Lake Worth Channel, and Peanut Island.

You can find Orlando has freshwater springs that offer unique snorkeling opportunities. There are a total of 8 freshwater springs in the area including Apopka Spring, Wekiwa Springs, Blue Springs, DeLeon Springs, Alexander Springs, Juniper Springs, Silver Glen Springs, and Rock Springs. Just as an example of what you will find with freshwater springs, we will take a look at Rock Springs. Rock Springs has a sand bottom with a visibility of 100 feet and is only around 3 to 6 feet deep. The spring can be found in Kelly Park where you will view blue gill and other fish that enjoy freshwater.

Sanford is home to Blue Springs, which is an awesome snorkeling area. You are sure to love the white sand and green moss bottom with a 100-foot visibility. The depth is around 3 to 8 feet with snorkeling and tubing gear for rent. You will see a sign warning of alligators.

Panama City offers an awesome snorkeling experience at St. Andrews Bay Jetties. Even though the jetties is a man made structure it is now a reef type home for all kinds of tropical fish including butterfly and urchins. The sandy bottom provides a very nice environment for all kinds of underwater sea life.

The Keys is a great place to visit for many reasons and one of these is snorkeling. Here you can enjoy snorkeling adventures at Bahia Honda State Park, Key West, Long Key, and Sombero Reef.

Bathtub Reef is located in Stuart, Florida. The bottom of the reef is worm coral with a 20 to 75 foot visibility with a depth of 2 to 15 feet. The only thing to remember when snorkeling in this area is not to walk on the coral. This can destroy the coral, which is home to all kinds of sea life.
